Background
To meet rising demands and lay the groundwork for a future-proof platform behind the scenes, Ingenico’s Platform Engineering team set out to transform their payments backbone, ushering in agility, resilience, and more effective developer enablement.
The Challenge: Scaling Payments in a Legacy Framework
For years, Ingenico relied on legacy infrastructure spread across decentralized systems. Integrating new banks and managing a growing variety of payment methods often meant slow, manual workarounds creating operational bottleneck and stifling velocity and development agility.
As the company moved toward Kubernetes and modern cloud-native patterns, they faced a critical gap: how to unify traffic management, centralize API control, and empower teams to build and ship with speed without compromising reliability or security.
The Solution: A Modern Gateway for a Global Payment Platform
To centralize and modernize its payment architecture, Ingenico turned to Solo’s Gloo Gateway, a Kubernetes-native API gateway built on Envoy Proxy. It became the foundation for a new platform designed for scale, resilience, and developer freedom.
The Platform Engineering team were able to implement:
- Cloud-native architecture to ensure flexibility and future readiness
- Microservices-based design to support modular, scalable development workflows
- Seamless Kubernetes integration for efficient deployment and orchestration
- GitOps workflows for version-controlled infrastructure management
- Developer-owned routing so teams could iterate and innovate with agility
With Gloo Gateway in place, teams could handle high transaction volumes, introduce new payment methods with ease, and manage routing and security at a global scale, all with fewer manual touchpoints.
What’s Next: Scaling Global Reach
With a modern payment infrastructure firmly in place, Ingenico is setting its sights on a global scale. They plan to expand their managed payment solutions to new regions and industries, backed by a strong partnership with Solo.io including exploring Gloo Mesh to help unify traffic policies, observability, and service discovery across their environments.
